The Karen McKellin Award is a program for foreign student who exhibit superior academic attainments, leadership skills, involvement in student affairs and community service, and recognized accomplishment in other key areas.

Benefits of Karen McKellin Award

The value of Karen McKellin Award is proportional to recipient’s financial necessity. Financial need is calculated by adding tuition, fees, and living expenses, and subtracting the financial contribution recipient and family can make per annum. A standard needs evaluation is based on the financial information provided by recipient and family.

Karen McKellin Award can be accessible for up to three more years (renewed) of undergraduate study or to degree completion – whichever comes first – provided applicant achieves adequate academic standing in the faculty, continue to show financial need, and maintain Canadian study permit (student visa).

Eligibility for Karen McKellin Award

To be considered for the Karen McKellin Award:

• Applicants must be foreign students who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian study permit.
• Applicants must be entering UBC from a known secondary school, college, or other university.
• Applicants should be aiming to apply for first undergraduate degree.
• Applicants have to meet UBC’s admission requirements, as well as general and degree-specific prerequisite and the English Language Admission Standard.
• Applicants must show superior academic attainment (at least an A average or equivalent standard).
• Applicants must show a level of financial need that would otherwise hinder pursuing a UBC degree.
